Sugar Tips

Uses of Sugar

Sugar is an irreplaceable functional ingredient in food that is versatile. Sugar not only
provides sweetness but is also used to add bulk, balanced acidity and/or prevent spoilage.

Baking

Volume in
Bread Baking

Yeast feeds on sugar to produce carbon dioxide, the leavening gas that causes the dough to rise. If there is not enough sugar, the dough will rise slowly or not at all. Sugar also has other important functions in bread
making, improve the crumb texture, and retain moisture in the bread.

Create Volume

Sugar is added to the whisking of egg whites, especially important for foam type cakes and meringues. The sugar helps to stabilize the foam structure and allow more air to be incorporated, making your baked goods tall and soft.

Colour

Millard reaction is responsible for the nice browned colour and complex flavour that makes your bread, baked goods and food such as seared meats delicious. It occurs when proteins and sugar are heated, producing new aromas and colours.

Cooking

Retain Moisture
in the Meat

Sugar retains the moisture in meat, which bind the protein and water. When making stew, it prevents the meat from becoming tough.

Tenderise Steak

You may realise that your steak is chewy even though it reveals the perfectly medium-rare colour when it is off the grill. Try adding some brown sugar to the rub before cooking, not only does it tenderize your beef, poultry or vegetable, it also gives a caramelized crust.

Taste

Add a small amount of sugar to your bran cereals and plain oatmeal, it improves the taste of the high fibre sources.

Flavour Balance

Add sugar to tomato and vinegar-based sauce, dressing, and brines, it balances the different flavours of spicy, salty and acidic
to make your food more enjoyable.

Preservation

Recipes of jams, jellies, sauces, preserves and dressing often contain sugar. Sugar does more than just adding sweetness. It helps in preserving the colour and texture. In jellies, it helps the gel to form and increase the flavour. Sugar also absorbs extra moisture and extends shelf life by inhibiting microbial activity, delaying spoilage.

Health

Halt Hiccups

Eating a spoonful of sugar helps halt hiccups as it affects the vagus nerve, connecting the brain and stomach. The sugar irritates the back of the throat and interrupts the spasms.

Soothes Bee Stings

Sugar dissolved in equal parts of water soothes bee stings and bites by extracting the venom from the wound.

Sugar Water Ease
Vaccine Pain
for Babies

“A spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down”. Studies show that infants up to 1 year of age shed fewer tears and may feel less pain when they drink a sweet-tasting sugary solution before their routine immunisation when compared with infants who tasted water or received no treatment.

Beauty

Makes Lipstick
Last Longer

Sprinkle some sugar on your lips after applying lipstick and lick it off after a minute. The sugar draws moisture from the lipstick and will extend the colour.

Cosmetics

Sugar is used in cosmetics for exfoliating and moisturizing properties. They are recognized as able to help our skins retain their optimum hydration and water content while being also a soothing agent, it makes the skin more supple.

DIY Stain Remover

To get rid of the stain, mix water, white vinegar, and sugar to form a paste and rub over the stain. Let it sit for 10-20 minutes, then wash with regular detergent. Make sure that the stain is gone before you put it into the dryer, otherwise, you will need to wash it again as the heat can set the stain if the stain is not removed.

Clean and
Deodourise Coffee
or Spice Grinder

To clean grinders, pour 1/4 cup of sugar and let it run for a few minutes. Sugar will break down and clean out all the excess oils and eliminate the nasty odour that has built up in the machine over time. Wash it out and wipe clean.

Keep Baked
Goods Fresh

Add a few sugar cubes to the airtight container of baked goods. The sugar will absorb the moisture of bread, cookies and cakes and prevent mould growth, making them taste fresher.

Keep Flowers
Fresher, Longer

Add about 3 teaspoons of sugar and 2 tablespoons of vinegar to a vase of water and fresh-cut flowers. The sugar provides food for the flowers while the vinegar
prevents the growth of bacteria.
Change the water every day.

Clean greasy hands

Use a teaspoon of sugar and a little water from working on your car or bicycle before washing with soap as usual. The sugar helps lift the grease and acts as an abrasive to wash the grease quickly

Lighter Fluid
Substitute

Don’t have any lighter fluid for a barbeque? Try using dusting sugar on the charcoal before you light them. Sugar decomposes rapidly when exposed to flame and releases a chemical that can help
to ignite the charcoal.

Gardening

Indoor and Outdoor
Pest Solutions

If you notice that plants are dying and wilting for no reason, it might be caused by nematodes feeding. Sprinkle a handful of sugar in the soil around the plants. Sugar is an environmentally friendly option that encourages the growth of microorganisms that may create a hostile environment for nematodes.
